Gothic and Realistic Features in the Works of Flannery O´Connor and Carson McCullers

The diploma thesis focuses on a comparative analysis of Flannery O'Connor's and Carson McCullers' Southern Gothic literary works. Special emphasis is put on the relationship between the gothic and realistic features. The comparative analysis is based on the characterisation of Southern Gothic literature (the landscape and environment as the main focus), which leads to the specification of its main features. Individual chapters contain O'Connor's and McCullers' biographies. The comparative analysis itself concentrates on the description of the heroes and their relationships, the function of landscape, the meaning of grotesque motifs, the connection of traditional and comical features, the influence of past, the role of religion and the issue of good and evil.

The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz

This thesis, called The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz, concerns the political theology of J. B. Metz. The first part summarizes the influences, which shaped his theological thinking and it presents his concept of political theology. The next part asks a question about the relationship between the ideas of redemption and emancipation in Metz's theology. This is based on the interpretation of a chapter from his book, Glaube in Geschichte und Gesellschaft, which concerns the topic. But before the interpretation of Metz's text, the problems of relationship between the two terms and of their origin are described. The extent of the field of meaning of the term "emancipation" is illustrated by the examples of the thinking of Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx and Jürgen Habermas. A large part is dedicated to the figures of the Frankfurt school, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, and their specific approach to the idea of emancipation and the Enlightenment tradition. The final thesis rejects the opinion, that the ideas of emancipation and redemption in Metz's theology coincide too much and it puts stress on the importance of the term "history of suffering" for solving this problem of Metz's theology. From fallen angel to blonde beast: characters of prostitutes in Balzac's The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans and Zola's Nana

Subject to this degree work is the character of prostitutes in French society in the 19th century reflected in eight selected works of French authors of the time. In the first part of my thesis the history of prostitution from "religious prostitution" in ancient Greece to its "golden age" in France in the 19th century is described. The decay of moral principles in the post-Revolutionary period (as a result of religious and social taboos collapse) causes a great spread of prostitution and venereal diseases. Because of these reasons it was necessary to take the legalizing and organizing precautions - the French System. The second part of this work takes addresses the different (romantic and naturalistic) representations of the character of the prostitute in the literature of the 19th century. The representative of the romantic interpretation of the courtesan who is driven to sin due to poverty (the myth of the "fallen angel" redeemed by pure love) is Honoré de Balzac and his novel "The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans". The opposite pole to the romantic interpretation of prostitutes is a naturalistic beast which chooses the oldest profession herself as a means of executing social revenge. Atonement and redemption in the novel Crime and Punishment with reference to Biblical texts

Annotation: This thesis is an attempt for a religous interpretation of Dostoeyevsky's novel Crime and Punishment. The thesis attempts to interpret the novel from the perspective of redemption and atonement. It is not our aim to focus on seperate aspects of the novel. Rather, we wish to provide a complete interpretation of the novel through the religious theme of redemption. By means of Bachtin's method of 'grotesque realism' we observe the development of religous themes in the novel from the perspective of their carnivalisation. We observe the development of the resurrection theme in the novel and find this theme supported by various forms of symbolism of life and death in the novel. This thesis considers Lazarus's story in John 11 as central to the meaning of the novel and focuses on literary elaboration of this evangelical text within the novel.

Theological anthropology in the worlds of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis and George Lucas

In this work I explore the subject of theological motives in the worlds of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien - Middle-earth, Clive Staples Lewis - Narnia and George Lucas - Star Wars. In the world of the Middle-earth, it will be the whole canon, which contains stories from the Middle- earth focusing on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I will use all seven books from the world of Narnia. In George Lucas's world, I'm mainly using the so-called G-canon. If there's a topic that's not covered by this canon, I'll look into the so-called T-canon, or the C-canon. I will compare the different theological questions in the approaches of an author influenced by Anglicism, Catholicism and Methodism with Buddhism. The most important questions for me will be creation, sin, grace, hope, forgiveness and redemption. For each topic, I compare the approaches and compare them to the biblical narrative. The aim of the work is if and howt extent these stories reflect a biblical view of man and of history.
